| “Worth it!” Two kids (8 & 10), mom, and dad took the long tour and enjoyed it. Unlike Mammoth or Carlsbad Caverns, Wind Cave has mostly small spaces, but it's one of only caves in the world where you will see "boxwork" formations. Interestingly, no stalactites or stalagmites. Tour guide was inexperienced, but o.k. just the same. Bonus: drove past herds of buffalo (had to wait for a couple to cross the road) and fields of prairie dogs on the way in. The kids LOVED all of it. |

| “Candlelight Tour, the way to go!” Long Island, NY
We did this tour a few days ago. Really, really nice. I think there are two big reasons why my family and I would recommend this tour. First being the nice small group size of 10. When you pass the other tours in the very beginning of this tour you realize how special the small size of this tour is. After a little overlapping of the other tours you're off to explore a less developed area of the cave. Some cool maneuvering is needed in many places but nothing really too tough. My 11 year old daughter had a blast. It's all boxwork and as other reviewers have said it's not as visually showy as other caves, but it's still very beautiful in it's own right and well worth the trip. I really hate walking on paved walkways in caves and my favorite thing about this tour was that most of it is on dirt. You will also have to wear gloves and of course carry a candle bucket. This makes it more challenging and the gloves are necessary since you will have to touch the ground and the walls at times to maneuver. You definitely need to make your reservation in advance for this one. I made ours a month ahead. |

| “Candlelight Tour Incredible”
Austin, TX
My husband, nine year old daughter and I took the Candlelight tour. There are two per day during the summer and you must make reservations. They allow 4-10 persons on these tours. They are on the stairs for the first part, then go off for the second part. This is the way to go. As far as caves go, Wind Cave is amazing. It is not your average cave, but has boxwork and other features that you really want to see up close. If you love caves, this is a must see. Our guide could take us in smaller groups into small areas to show us cool formations. The candle is in a very light bucket. I thought this would be heavy; it was not. The ranger provides gloves for you so you can balance inside the cave and not touch the walls with your hands. The ad says strenuous. I am not in great shape and am not quite released from shoulder surgery. I was a little worried, but I made it with very little trouble. My nine year old daughter did great. We stopped often to look at things so it was not a complete 2 hour hike. I would do it again if I ever got the chance!!!! |
